What is reading difficulty?
Well, as the name implies, it is the difficulty of a child to read easily. Reading difficulty is often synonymous with dyslexia while there are other different forms of reading difficulties as well. Dyslexia or difficulty in reading is characterized by poor reading skills including difficulties in recognizing words, spelling and decoding.
The most common patterns of poor reading involve
- Not able to remember information for a longer time
- Mixed reading difficulties
- Specific word-reading difficulties
- Poor retaining capacity of words learnt
- Specific reading comprehension difficulties
- Word confusions – Insertion / deletion of words while reading
What causes poor reading skills?
There are several factors that cause reading difficulty including poor exposure to the language, inadequate early literacy activities, inadequate instruction, and neurological /or biological- based risk factors.
Since parents are often the first people to suspect that their child has a reading difficulty, it’s important to know the signs and symptoms of reading disorders.
What are the signs and symptoms of reading disorders?
- Difficulty in sounding out words
- Inconsistent performance/does better one-to-one
- Poor retention of information/has been retained
- Excessive parental involvement in homework/takes too long to complete homework
- Loss of self-esteem
- Dropping grades
- Does less well on tests than homework
- Short attention span/hyperactivity
- History of speech-language problems
- Frequent school absences
- Hates school/school phobic/psychosomatic symptoms
- Hides schoolwork/lies about assignments/loses homework repeatedly
- Trouble with letter sounds or letter naming
- Problem with recognizing sounds & the letters which make up those sounds
- Slow reading
- Poor spelling
- Problems in reading loudly using the correct expression
- Trouble understanding what is being read

We will get back to you with a reply mail with information on the first appointment/consultation.
- During the first consultation which is free, one of our experts will discuss with you about your child and his/her requirements and will decide on whether an assessment is required or not.
- If assessment is required, the expert will discuss the payment and time involved and then fix a schedule for the first assessment.
- On the first assessment, we do a comprehensive assessment of your child’s writing difficulty using various time-tested strategies and methods to confirm the presence of the difficulty and to determine its intensity.
- Based on our assessment and evaluation, a second consultation (free of cost) will be scheduled and the report of the assessment will be discussed with much emphasis on what needs to be done and the parents will be given options which include self-training, IEP support, online coaching, mentoring support and counselling.
- Based on the parents’ requirement, a coach or mentor is allotted to assist the child with the process.
- An IEP or Individualized Education Plan for the child will be designed by our special educators. The parent or teacher will be educated / trained on how to use the IEP effectively to train the child.
- At this juncture too, you can choose whether you want to self-coach or opt for trainer-assisted coaching.
- Counselling is also an integral part of the process whereby our specialized child counselors offer the right support, guidance, and advice as and when required by the parent, teacher, or the child.
- All the components of the process including consultation, assessment, evaluation, IEP designing, coaching, training, mentoring, and counselling will take place through the online platform. We will guide you from the beginning to the end and ensure your child is adequately trained to attain his/her personal and academic goals.

- Assessment is a gathering of relevant information about an individual’s areas of strengths and challenges to determine whether he or she may have a disability or a disorder or a unique ability.
- Reading difficulties are common and are associated with poor long-term academic achievement. Evaluation of a child’s developmental, educational, and family histories in conjunction with standardized screening tests / informal academic screening / functional academic assessment can increase recognition of risk factors for reading difficulties.
- Skills assessed for spotting reading difficulties in children include:

- Phonological working memory
- We use informal academic assessment tests to identify the areas where the child needs support. This includes the child’s reading ability, spelling ability and word knowledge.

- An IEP will include a list of objectives, secondary objectives, a plan to achieve those objectives, interventions, and techniques to reach the set objective and alternatives to support contingencies.
- An Individualized Education Plan is a planned schedule of instructions for a child to attain certain objectives in a fixed period of time.
- School-age children with reading difficulties should receive individualized instruction to increase phonologic awareness, decoding skills, sight word vocabulary, and reading comprehension. Intervention should begin early, be provided by expert teachers, and use detailed and intensive approaches emphasizing phonologic awareness and phonics instruction.
- The assessment will provide us a list of areas where a child needs to improve and an IEP will be designed to plan out a strategy to improvise those areas under certain period.

- Many studies have shown that children with difficulties in word reading benefit from explicit systematic phonics interventions whereas children with comprehension difficulties benefit from explicit teaching and modelling of text comprehension strategies as well as from interventions that promote vocabulary and oral language development.
