What is autism?
Autism or ASD (autism spectrum disorder) is a condition that’s associated with brain development. It affects how a child perceives and socializes, causing trouble in communication and social interaction. ASD also includes limited & repetitive patterns of behaviour. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain. Some people with ASD have a known difference such as a genetic condition. Other causes are not yet known. Scientists believe there are multiple causes of ASD that act together to change the most common ways people develop. We still have much to learn about these causes and how they impact people with ASD.
Actually, there isn’t just one cause of autism. Studies suggest that autism develops from several genetic, non-genetic or environmental influences.
Patterns of behavior in an autistic child
- Repetitive behaviors like rocking, jumping, hand-flapping, or twirling
- Fixations on specific objects or activities
- Constant moving (pacing) & “hyper” behavior
- Extreme sensitivity to touch, sound, and light
- Specific rituals or routines and getting upset when there’s even a slight change in the routine
Signs and Symptoms
Social communication and interaction skills can be challenging for people with ASD.
- Avoids or does not keep eye contact
- Does not respond to name by 9 months of age
- Does not show facial expressions like happiness, sadness, anger, and surprise by 9 months of age
- Does not play simple interactive games like pat-a-cake by 12 months of age
- Uses very few or no gestures by 12 months of age (e.g., does not wave goodbye)
- Does not share interests with others (e.g., shows you an object that he or she likes by 15 months of age)
- Does not point or look at what you point to by 18 months of age
- Does not notice when others are hurt or sad by 24 months of age
- Does not pretend in play (e.g., does not pretend to “feed” a doll by 30 months of age)
- Shows little interest in peers
- Has trouble understanding other people’s feelings or talking about own feelings at 36 months of age or older
- Does not play games with turn taking by 60 months of age
Restricted or Repetitive Behaviours or Interests
- Lines up toys or other objects and gets upset when order is changed
- Repeats words or phrases over and over (i.e., echolalia)
- Plays with toys the same way every time
- Is focused on parts of objects (e.g., wheels)
- Gets upset by minor changes
- Has obsessive interests
- Must follow certain routines
- Flaps hands, rocks body, or spins self in circles
- Has unusual reactions to the way things sound, smell, taste, look, or feel
Other Characteristics
- Delayed language skills
- Delayed movement skills
- Delayed cognitive or learning skills
- Hyperactive, impulsive, and/or inattentive behaviour
- Epilepsy or seizure disorder
- Unusual eating and sleeping habits
- Gastrointestinal issues (e.g., constipation)
- Unusual mood or emotional reactions
- Anxiety, stress or excessive worry
- Lack of fear or more fear than expected

- On the first assessment, we do a comprehensive assessment of your child’s Autism Presence using various time-tested strategies and methods to confirm the presence of the difficulty and to determine its intensity.
- Based on our assessment and evaluation, a second consultation (free of cost) will be scheduled, and the report of the assessment will be discussed with much emphasis on what needs to be done and the parents will give options which include self-training, IEP support, online mentoring support and counselling.
- Based on the parents’ requirement, a mentor is allotted to assist the child with the process.
- An IEP or Individualized Education Plan for the child will be designed by our special educators. The parent or teacher will be educated / trained on how to use the IEP effectively to train the child.
- At this juncture too, you can choose whether you want to self-coach or opt for trainer-assisted mentoring.
- Counselling is also an integral part of the process whereby our specialized child counselors offer the right support, guidance, and advice as and when required by the parent, teacher or the child.
- All the components of the process including consultation, assessment, evaluation, IEP designing, coaching, training, mentoring, and counselling will take place through the online platform. We will guide you from the beginning to the end and ensure your child is adequately trained to attain his/her personal and academic goals.

- Assessment is a gathering of relevant information about an individual’s areas of strengths and challenges to determine whether he or she may have a disability or a disorder or a unique ability.
